The last match of the 2015 schoolboy season concluded on Saturday at Wesley College with the annual first XVIII representative match played between the two schoolboy associations. APS has a superior record over its rival AGSV, winning 12 out of the 16 matches played since 1999.

At least one member from each school made up each teams side, with Penleigh-Essendon Grammar the most represented out of the nine AGSV schools with five players while 2015 APS premiers Brighton Grammar had the most represented out of the 11 APS schools with four players.

After taking the lead after quarter time, APS never looked back winning comfortably by 38 points.

A large mud patch appeared a centre half forward at one end of Wesley’s Glen Waverley home ground, which made it was hard for the forwards to find space on their leads. With the ground also soft under feet, it made for a sloppy game with both sides having their fair share of fumbles and errors.

With just 12 goals for the first half, the game opened up in the second half with 14 goals alone kicked in the third quarter. Harvey Hooper controlled the ball off half back for APS ensuring AGSV wouldn’t be able to pull off their first win in five years against APS.

St Kevins tall Thomas Jok was the dominant forward for APS kicking five goals showing off his athletic capabilities as well as taking some nice overhead marks impressing the scouts at the game.

Caulfield Grammar key position forward Nathan Peterson also partnered Jok well inside 50, kicking three goals. Peterson took numerous marks inside 50, including a fantastic mark in the second quarter in front of the pavilion.

At the other end Marcellin College midfielder Matthew Perry was the best for AGSV. Perry played as a lead up half forward and was able to end the game with four goals . Perry also spent time in the middle working hard at the stoppages and propelling the ball forward.

AGSV were the better side when moving the ball inside their 50, hitting targets at will allowing for the scoreline to remain close. However it was the APS midfield led by Corey Rich, Bailey Biggs and Lachlan Walker that was able to get APS greater inside 50 numbers on the back of great ruck work from Brighton’s Blake Hayes.

PEGS’ Connor McGuire kicked the first goal of the match, ending with four majors for the match in an impressive feat up forward for AGSV in the damp conditions in a match that was dominated by key forwards at both ends.

AGSV captain Zac Wunhym worked tirelessly all day in the centre, unfortunately for the AGSV they weren’t able to come back from the 19 point deficit at three quarter time resulting in the APS running out deserving winners 139 to 101 in a high scoring match of school boy football.
