Early look: Country sides’ top ball winners

AFTER taking a look at the top performers across each statistical category from the Metro sides, AFL Draft Central now turns its attention to the six country teams. The clear number on ball winner is Gippsland over-ager Matthew McGannon, who has collected a competition-high 84 disposals in three rounds. He leads GWV Rebels pair Lochie Dawson and Scott Carlin as the three country players above 70 disposals.

McGannon also leads all-comers in the marks, taking 30 grabs, 10 clear of teammate Kyle Reid and Dandenong Stingrays overager Angus Patterson with 20. In the tackle stat, Oscar Brownless is the clear leader with 24 tackles – an average of eight per game – five clear of Gippsland’s Bailey Beck. Remarkably, Brownless’ teammate Ed McHenry is the equal leader in the clearances with 19 so far this season despite playing just two gams. McHenry is equal with Gippsland’s Riley Baldi in the statistical area.

Bendigo forward Will Holt‘s hauls of five and three goals in rounds one and three has him equal competition leader in the goal kicking stakes. He is one ahead of Dandenong pocket rocket Jai Nanscawen, whose six goals against Gippsland in round two was the second most of any player for the season.

Murray’s Kyle Clarke has the most effective kick of any country player with 25 or more kicks so far this season, running at 79.5 per cent efficiency, about three per cent ahead of Gippsland’s Ryan Sparkes. GWV Rebels’ Jacob Lohmann is the most contested player so far with 40 or more disposals, notching up 59 per cent of his possessions in a contest. He comes in just ahead of Bendigo’s Zane Keighran and McHenry.

Other players who have managed to make it onto multiple statistical categories include Dandenong captain Campbell Hustwaite, Murray defender Lachlan Ash and overager Laitham Vandermeer, and GWV Rebels’ mid/forward Charlie Wilson.
