TASMANIA has claimed the Under 18 Academy Series and had 13 players subsequently named in the 50-man Allies squad for the National Under 18 Championships next month. Meanwhile, North Launceston continued its dominant run, and Launceston and Glenorchy played out a thriller in round seven of the Tasmanian State League (TSL).

Tasmania claim Under 18 Academy Series title and top Allies representation

Among the Tasmanians are top 10 fancy and North Melbourne Next Generation Academy member Tarryn Thomas, as well as midfielder Chayce Jones and small forward Blair Rubock. The result came on the back of Tasmania’s triumphant Under 18 Academy Series title, which included a last round victory over GWS GIANTS Academy to complete a clean sweep of the competition.

The Mariners found themselves trailing by eight points at quarter time, but lifted a gear after that, booting 12 goals to four in the final three quarters to run away with the 42-point win. Along with Thomas’ five majors, small forward Blair Rubock kicked three of his own, while potential top 30 pick Chayce Jones was again good for the Mariners. Tim Auckland and Ethan Jackson were others who impressed for the winners.

TSL Round 7 results:

Tigers 1.8 (14) defeated by Clarence 8.17 (65)
North Launceston 19.19 (133) defeated Lauderdale 5.9 (39)
Launceston 12.9 (81) defeated Glenorchy 13.2 (80)

There was one thriller amongst two beltings as the match of the round well and truly belonged to Launceston-Glenorchy. It was not looking like a close contest at three quarter time as the Blues led by 28 points with a quarter to play. Kicking with the breeze, the Magpies stormed home to boot 7.0 to 2.3, falling short by the smallest of margins. The accuracy on goal was the reason Glenorchy kept in the game, kicking a remarkable 13.2 from 15 scoring shots. Ben Kamaric booted three goals and was named the Magpies’ best, while Jay Blackberry booted two for the winners and was the Blues’ top player. The Blues’ win means they take outright second, moving four points and percentage clear of the Magpies.

In the other games, ladder leaders North Launceston made light work of Lauderdale, belting them by 94 points. North Launceston had 10 individual goal kickers’ to Lauderdale’s three, with Thomas Bennett (four) and Taylor Whitford (three) leading the way and named best on ground. Jeremiah Perkins was named the losing side’s best player, along with Josh and Ben McGuinness. In the other game, Clarence also record a comfortable win, defeating the Tigers by 51 points, holding them to just one goal from nine scoring shots for the match. Ryan Bailey was named best on ground in the victory, as a four goals to zero second term set up the low-scoring victory. Ashton Dickenson and Fletcher Seymour both booted two goals for the winners, while Hugh Johnston was named the Tigers’ best in the loss.
