Magpies swoop, Cats pounce into early AFLW draft spots

COLLINGWOOD and Geelong will hold the keys to unlocking Victoria’s top-age footballing talent after a busy AFL Women’s Trade Period which saw both teams actively try and improve their draft position. Between the two sides, they hold 11 of the first 18 Victorian picks in the AFLW National Draft, meaning the top 18 year-olds can expect to be seeing some familiar faces if they are selected by one of the two clubs. Carlton and the Western Bulldogs have three picks inside the top 20, while Melbourne has two, and North Melbourne has the sole selection – its first in the AFLW Draft – at Pick 19.

A total of seven players moved to other clubs during the AFLW Trade period, with the Demons picking up Adelaide’s Talia Radan and Carlton’s Maddison Gay, Carlton swooped on Magpie Amelia Barden, Collingwood picked up Nicole Hildebrand, Brisbane now has former Blues captain Lauren Arnell, the GIANTS welcomed Christina Bernardi, and GIANTS veteran Renee Forth became a Crow. It is no surprise given the Adelaide, Brisbane and GIANTS having exclusive access to their state’s draft pool, that the clubs went searching for established talent in exchange for draft picks.

Geelong will kick off proceedings in the draft, retaining the top two draft picks, before Carlton, Fremantle and Collingwood round out the top five selections.
